How You Can Do Business Like An Olympian

Business Olympian

In this week’s article, I’m discussing what we can learn about business coaching from the Rio Olympics.

The Rio Olympics

Recently the Rio Olympics came to its usual spectacular conclusion and Great Britain made history with its best ever medals haul. Our athletes beating china in the medals table!

This is a fantastic result due to massive and consistent investment in sports development at every level.

Well done to everyone involved!

But it isn’t just Team GB that made the headlines. Brazillian pole-vaulter Thiago Braz da Silva winning only his country’s 5th Gold medal of all time.

In between torrential downpours, the vaulters made their attempts at greatness in awful conditions and even the most experienced and previously successful athletes failed to perform.

What struck me while watching the competition was the response of his coach Vitaly Petrov. He burst into tears of joy as da Silva made his Olympic record making winning vault.

And this got me thinking about the unsung heroes of the Olympics…

The coaches.

Getting the right coach can make a massive difference to the performance of athletes. They push them beyond their own beliefs to achieve more than they ever thought possible.

And, it is the same in business too.

Having a business coach and sales training can keep your team motivated and performing at the top level, even in the worst conditions and against the stiffest competition.

This is how you can do business like an Olympian

Business Like An Olympian – use business coaching to go for gold

Learn from others’ experience

A good coach usually has a wealth of experience, backed up by years of study and application, based on the success of his personal career or that of his previous clients.

Petrov had previously coached former Olympic and world champion Sergey Bubka who had broken the world record 35 times in his career.

Did da Silva benefit from that? Undoubtedly!

Good coaching and training can radically shorten the learning curve and help speed up results. Essentially training shows you what works and then helps you put the work in where it matters.

Learning how to do “Business like an Olympian” by trial and error takes time and business coaching can speed that up exponentially!

Improve Your Technique

Self training is great when you start, but if you want real success, having a business mentor or coach who has been there before can help you improve.

Over time, great coaches develop a process for creating excellence and share that with their clients, showing them new perspectives and understandings that take their performance beyond anything they thought was possible.

Having an objective, repeatable process is the best way to make gains quickly, in whatever you do.  This is the principle behind our sales system PROCES, which is based on 30 years of award winning experience managing sales teams of all sizes.

New Tools

There is a saying in business that “…we don’t know…what we don’t know”.  Basically, it is difficult to identify accurately what we need to improve…as we are already doing the best we can with what we know.

A great coach will bring with them a host of new techniques and technologies which will improve performance by showing their clients new ways of doing old things.

This is particularly useful in the personal development areas of Identifying and correcting mistakes, motivation and accountability.

And, it is the same with business.

Einstein is once quoted as saying…

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over …and expecting a different result”

Having new and better tools will give us new ways of working to drive us on to greater and more impressive results and equip us to do “Business like an Olympian”
